Default Dyed Wrappers on Cigars

I've heard this discussed several times but never thought much of it myself, but I got nailed with one today that made me think twice.

Since RP's OWR made #8 on CA's Top 25 I decided to pull one out of the humi and give it a shot. I've recently read some post on 'cigar wetting' and with the crazy weather here in GA this time of year my humi was a couple points low (62%) so I decided to try it out.

Well... when I rubbed the cigar this is what I got. Ridiculous. I know there are some that have said they don't care about dyed wrappers but if you've got to doctor your stuff up THIS much then you must be starting with some pretty bad wrapper leaf. And what is in the dye that he's using to get this color???

I sure won't run out to buy anymore RP's in the future.

I remember a couple years ago we were clownin a guy at the B&M for his black lips after smoking a cigar. It wasn't Rocky, but since I can't remember the brand for certain I won't drop any names. It wasn't an off-brand though.

One of the things I like most about cigars is the lack of chemicals and other additives to the tobacco. I certainly won't be smoking these anymore. Sad, cuz back in the day they were damn good!

How did I know the cigar was going to be an RP? He makes shitty sticks anyway.

My feelings exactly. I like the fact that cigars are all tobacco leaf and not knowing what this 'dye' is makes me want to avoid the cigars.

It's too bad they don't have to disclose these things.

I'm not a fan of Maduros anyways, but I guess this is another good reason for me to avoid them

I had a simalar experiece with a Alec Bradley Tempus Magistri Maduro. It was tasty; but I only allow myself brown fingers and lips after some chocolate, cigars are inexcusable.

Dude, first of all , there is no need to "Wet" your cigars at 62%. I keep one of my humidors @ 64% and they smoke fine. I'm willing to bet I could keep them at 58% and they would be fine as well.

Second of all, this isn't a news flash. I hate to say this, but I am willing to bet you didn't buy those at the local B&M, but bought them on-line.

I find huge quality differences (including added darkness) between online and B&M purchaces and have stopped buying online all together (except for the special overseas).

There is actually an article on dying cigars. There is nothing artificial that is done other than the spraying, all the ingridients to the spray is natural, including tobacco and vegitables in the mix. Still won't smoke RPs though, and when I blind trade now, I say "Nothing RP or "made by" RP....

The cigar wetting has been a hot topic on a lot of boards lately, actually most people who have tried it are for it and a lot of those advocating it are long-time cigar smokers.

I know the dyeing is nothing new but this was extreme, not sure where this one came from as I got it in a bomb.

Yeah, I've seen that info before Ron, I know it's done - but it still doesn't mean I have to like it. It's not right for one cigar maker to take the time to age and ferment to get a true maduro wrapper and another to just steam/cook/dye/paint the wrapper and if they are sitting on the shelf next to each other they can both be called a maduro.

Kind of like that fake crab meat stuff, they have to call it surimi (or something like that) or they spell it with a K (Krab) to let you know it's an imiatator. Maybe they can make cigar makers smell it Muduro if they use a dying process???

Here's another one for ya..

Bay Scallops. They are actually Skate fish meats cut into circles...

You're right. I don't like it, and there are more out there than RP that do it. Nestor Special reserve Maddies do it too...

That would be SEA scallops. Bay scallops are the lil bitty ones, and they are typically the real deal (I managed a seafood shop for a while).

I suddenly have a craving for Coquilles St Jacques...

The thing is, maduro isn't exclusively a color. It's an aging/fermenting process. Sometimes it gets the color, sometimes it doesn't. You can have a cigar that is technically a maduro, but doesn't have the dark color that we like to associate with a maduro. So, while I don't like it either, I can see where they might go 'bollocks, this doesn't look like a maduro...but it is...lets dye it and make it look it too.'
